September 13, 1872 - January 3, 1918
Wife of John Henry King
Martha Mattie Robertson was born 13 September 1872. Daughter of William H. and Samantha Robertson of Leon, Arkansas. At the age of 20 years, she married John Henry King on 15 October 1893. After their marriage, John and Mattie moved to a farm just south of Charleston, Arkansas and began to work the land and raise a family. They were the parents of 8 children: William Isaac King (1894), Claud Melvin King (1896), Bertha T King (1897) Mamie F. King [Craig] (1900), Clarence Alvin King (1902), John Henry King Jr. (1904), Lawrence Edward King (1906), Clara R King (1909). The children were baptized and raised in the Catholic Church. Mattie worked as a nurse and mid-wife for Dr. Freer and during the great Spanish flu epidemic of 1917-1919, Mattie contracted and died of the illness that she fought so hard to eradicate. She passed away on 3 January 1918.
