Another of this section's old settlers has answered the last call and departed on the journey to that unknown land between life on this mortal sphere and in that land of endless day. J.T. Chastain, 87 years old, passed away at his home in the Fairmount community south of Gentry at 2:15 a.m. Thursday following a lingering illness. Funeral service was conducted at the Fairmount church Friday afternoon by Rev. Smith followed by interment in the Fairmount cemetery under the direction of Carpenter Bros. of Gentry. Service at the grave was conducted by Gentry Lodge No. 222 F. & A.M. of which the deceased was a charter member. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends in attendance at the last sad rites bespoke the high esteem in which he was held in this part of the county. Mr. Chastain, one of Benton county's oldest settlers, was born in Murphy, N.C. in 1844, coming to Benton county with his parents when but a mere lad, settling near Gentry where he had since made his home. He was the father of eleven children, two of whom, together with the mother, preceded him in death several years. Surviving him are: Mrs. A.E. Rausher, Gentry; J.L. Chastain, Springtown; Mrs. N.M. Shields, Fairmount; P.D. Chastain, Ponca City, Okla.; Mrs. E.A. Deatheridge, Ringold, Texas; Mrs. Pearl Black, L.H. Chastain, Mrs. T.E. Martin, Cortez, Colo.; Mrs. Will Aldridge, Apache, Okla.
