Jack Mountjoy Sloan of Powhatan died June 18, 2021 at the home of his daughter in Saffell. He was born to the late James Franklin and Snow Mountjoy Sloan at Clovercrest in Black Rock on September 20, 1927. He married Suzanne Cornelius May 27, 1953 at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas.
Also preceding in death were his wife of 42 years; older brother, James Franklin Sloan III, daughter Dixie Moore, and grandson Justin Sloan Durham.
Surviving are his children: Lesia Phillips and grandchildren Ryan (Beth), Austin (Tosha), and Clay (Jordan) Phillips; step-grandchildren Randy and Sammy Moore; Daniel (Cindy) Sloan and grandchildren Jeremiah (Blythe) and Sarah Sloan (fiancé Luke Holloway), Stacy Killian, Katie (Josh) McGaha, and Jodie (Blake) Perkins, bonus family Dean (Michelle) Cross and Tammy Davis; Dina (Sloan) Durham and grandchildren Courtney (fiancée Paula Perkins), and Dr. April Durham, and Kalie Jines; Kelly Sloan and grandson Skylar Sloan; Michael (Kendra) Sloan and grandchildren Nathan (Vicky) and Trever Sloan, Cody Robins, and Pasha Murphy; Patrick (Michele) Sloan and grandchildren Christopher (Brittany), Bridget, and Brandon Sloan, Jacquelyn (Kenny) Whisnant and grandchildren Shantel Blankenship Archer and Jacob Blankenship. He is also survived by 42 great-grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren, his younger brother Winston (Anne) Sloan, three nephews and three nieces.
Words to describe him include: “intelligent, patient, modest, quiet, reserved, fair-minded, thinks before he speaks.”
Graduating from Black Rock High School as salutatorian in 1945 he entered college at University of Arkansas. After a semester, he was drafted into the Army, completed training, and landed in Japan on Christmas Eve. When he returned to college, he joined ROTC and after graduation and being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Upon completion of his obligation, he transferred to the Air Force Reserves and continued serving until he retired as Major Sloan with 20 years of accrued service. Several of those years were served as liaison officer for the Air Force Academy.
As a college student, he was a member of Sigma Chi, where he worked as house manager, and was recognized as a “Life Loyal Sig”. He was also a member of Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Zeta, Phi Sigma Biological Society, The National Society of Scabbard and Blade and the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society.
Jack spent a lifetime farming. At various times operations included cattle, hogs, and row crops. He managed and worked at his own concerns until his late 80s. He also managed his father’s estate from the age of 32 until it was divided among heirs. In the early 1980s he and some friends converted some of his pasture into a golf course which became his hobby. Even at his death, his grip was still strong.
He was elected to the Black Rock School Board in 1960 and continued to serve for over 25 years. As a school board member, he awarded diplomas to seven of his eight children.
Jack was part of the group that organized Farm Service, Inc. and served as the first vice president of its board of directors. He has also served on the Black River Technical College Advisory Board and the Black Rock Development Corporation Board of Directors. He was a charter member of Black Rock Lions Club, served as local committee chairman of the Boy Scouts and as a member of the Northeast Arkansas Boy Scout Council.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 26 at New Hope Baptist Church, 2720 Hwy. 117, Black Rock from 10:00am to noon followed by the funeral. Burial will be at Oak Forest Cemetery in Black Rock.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Jack’s four sons and his sons-in-law, Sloan Durham and Kenny Whisnant.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Justin Sloan Durham Scholarship, 1156 Hwy 115, Smithville, AR 72466, or the Sloan Memorial Scholarship Fund at Iberia Bank.
