David C. Rakes was born in Patrick County, Va. Aug. 17, 1844. On April 11 he suffered from a stroke of paralysis and died at his home, four miles south of Bentonville, Ark. April 16, 1921 at the age of 76 years. He was married to Mrs. Irene Webb Nov. 1, 1866. To this union were born 6 children, all of whom with his wife were present at the time of his death. He lived an exemplary Christian life and had been a member of the Primitive Baptist church for many years. He was a kind and loving husband and father and the loyalest of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. John Taylor Sunday afternoon April 17. Twelve of his grandsons carried his remains to its last resting place in the Hart cemetery near his home. Mr. Rakes was a Confederate veteran, serving the four years of the Civil War. He moved from Virginia to Arkansas in 1906. Besides his widow and six children: Albert C., John A., Joe W., Asa D., Rush A. and Mrs. Mary Wallace, he leaves 36 grandchildren, 9 dying when small, and 7 great-grandchildren, one dying in infancy; a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his loss. He was a man of whom anyone would be proud to call their friend and always stood fearlessly for the right, ever ready to help the needy one.

*Please note: Mr. Rakes daughters name was Mary Wallis not Wallace. Thank you
