Sarah McKee Burnside died at home Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, after a two-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. She was born Jan. 26, 1930, on a Presbyterian mission station at Bibanga in what was then the Belgian Congo, the fourth child of George Taylor and Elsie Maxfield McKee.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charles T. McKee and George T. McKee.

She is survived by her husband, Wade W. Burnside; one daughter, Carol Bustard-Burnside and her partner, Barbara Bustard-Burnside of Baltimore; two sons, Allen McKee Burnside and wife Guia of Denver, and Kirk McMillan Burnside and wife Lorie of Farmington; one sister, Elizabeth McKee Gerding of South Hampton, Pa.; a granddaughter, Sarah Kelsey Burnside McClellan of Baltimore; a stepgranddaughter, Callie Elizabeth Baumgardner of Farmington; two stepgrandsons, Todd Rollins Bustard and Matthew Ryan Bustard of Baltimore; seven nieces; three nephews, their spouses and children, and many, many loving friends.

The family gratefully acknowledges the dedicated and loving nursing care given to Sarah by Catherine Lyon, R.N., as well as Catherine's emotional support to Sarah and all of the members of the family.

Sarah earned a bachelor of arts degree from Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Ga., in 1951 and a master of arts degree in drama from the University of Arkansas in 1987. She married Wade W. Burnside in Mountain Home on Aug. 11, 1953. In 1959, following the completion of Wade's medical education and training, the couple made their home in Fayetteville, where Wade established a medical practice in pediatrics.

Sarah was honored in 2003 by the Northwest Arkansas Women's Coalition as a "History Making Woman," largely because of her involvement in organizations serving children's needs in our community. She received TheatreSquared's first Premiere Award on Oct. 20, 2006, in recognition of her years of participation in community theater.

Those who wish to honor Sarah's life may do so by making contributions to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association, P.O. Box 8925, Pueblo, Colo. 81008; Outreach Ministries of First United Presbyterian Church, 695 Calvin St., Fayetteville, 72703 or Agnes Scott College, Class of 1951 Visioning Fund for Faculty Research Grants, 141 East College Ave., Atlanta/Decatur, Ga. 30030-9802.
