Phyllis W. Caskey, 88, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Highlands Health Care in Bella Vista. She was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Minden, Iowa, to Ernest John Ploen and Minnie Matilda Luchsinger Ploen.
She was raised and educated in Minden, graduating in 1938. In 1943, she graduated from the Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing. She entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in December 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1945. She married Harold A. "Cass" Caskey on Aug. 30, 1944, in Minden. The couple lived in Storm Lake, Iowa, where she began working as a nurse in the Buena Vista Hospital in 1958. They moved to Newell, Iowa, where she worked as head nurse at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
She retired from nursing and moved to Bella Vista in 1986, She was a charter member of the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista and a member of the Garden Club. She enjoyed golfing, tap dancing and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Caskey; and three brothers, Virgil Ploen, Al Ploen and Billy Ploen.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue Gutz and Mel Gutz of Storm Lake, Iowa, Carol Bradford and Robert Bradford of Pineville, Mo., and Minda Vazquez and Julio Vazquez of Bentonville, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, at the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory.
Funeral services will he at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista with the Rev. Dennis Ritchie.
Burial will be at the Bella Vista Cemetery.
