*Obituary

John Woody Burney, 86, of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, left this earth for his forever home on Friday, Oct. 13, 2023, in Thomasville, North Carolina.

He was born March 12, 1937, the eldest of four boys, to Woodson (Woody) P. and Antha Ada Wolfe Burney, in Fort Worth, Texas. He attended school in Evant, Texas, and Wooster, Arkansas, before the family moved to Conway, Arkansas, when he was 12. He was a member of the Conway High School class of 1955.

John was a "people person," outgoing, optimistic and willing to make a venture. He made friends wherever he was. He was a charter member of the Little Rock "Friends" group. He loved to sail, travel, socialize, read and write. He enjoyed life and encouraged others to do the same. Over the last 30 years, he had compiled his first book "Creeks." Published in 2020, it is a collection of stories based loosely on childhood memories and tales his father had shared. He had started his second book to be dedicated to his wife, Sue, who passed away in 2022.

He began his career at the Arkansas Gazette but found that his gift was in sales. He took the reigns of Wood Mfg Co in Conway after the death of his father in 1974. Later, he was an independent furniture sales representative, calling on furniture dealers in several states. But his passion was for sailing and he realized a dream when he and Sue took the small sailboat he had and moved to Florida where they co-founded Seacoast Yacht Charters in Tarpon Springs (1995-2017) where they enjoyed sailing their larger boat the "Shamroga" (lrish for shamrock) and meeting people who wanted to enjoy the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. He was active in the Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce, serving as its president from 2002-2003.

John didn't know the meaning of "retirement" and after his years in the charter service went back on the road representing A & H Woodworking, a furniture manufacturer in Haleyville, Alabama. Finally retiring from "the road" he became the A & H sales manager until his death. He wrote the company's dealer newsletter and was faithful to attend furniture shows twice a year in Tupelo, Mississippi.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife and partner in business and adventure, Betty "Sue" Hodoway Nutt; his parents; one son, Patrick; an infant daughter, Cynthia; and two brothers, Tom and Robert Burney.

He is survived by his son, Michael Burney (Tina Poorman) of Hudson, Florida; his daughter, Deborah Peters (Ed) of lrving, Texas; one brother, Bill Burney (Judie) of Conway; and a sister-in-law, Bobbie Burney of Jacksonville, Arkansas.

Also surviving are grandsons, Patrick Burney {Shelby) of Newport Richey, Florida, and Andrew Burney (Sagan) of Bryant, Arkansas; and bonus children, Greg and Chris Seaton and Rebecca Womack and Tracie Canada; 10 grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as nephews and nieces and many, many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, in the fellowship hall of Family Life Bible Church, located at 150 S. Hogan Lane, Conway, Arkansas. It will be a casual, social time, as John would have enjoyed, with light refreshments and the sharing of memories by family and friends.

Burial of John and Sue's cremains will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Conway, Arkansas. Cremation services were by Davidson Funeral Home of Lexington, North Carolina. Local arrangements are by Roller-McNutt Funeral Home-Conway.

Memorial contributions can be made to Morrilton Pound Puppies (rescue) by check made out to Magie Vet Clinic, 404 E. Harding St., Morrilton, Arkansas, 72110, or to a church or charity of your choice.
