Charles James Rachels was the son of Charley Rachels. His family lived in Franklin County, Arkansas when he was a youngster. It was there, he met and eventually married Ima L. Kolb. They were blessed with one son.

Charles hobby was music. He played various musical instruments and was known for his lively music. He also performed with a band, so he was always eager to play and strike up a tune for the crowd. Even playing solo, he had his audience clapping and swaying to the music. Gatherings were never dull when Charles was around.
