Robert L. Jones Jr., 81, of Fort Smith passed away Thursday, April 1, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, and survived by his wife, Caroline; two sons, Robert L. Jones III and his fiancee, Cheryl Cannon and Kenny B. Jones and his wife, Rhonda of Fort Smith; two stepsons, Jim Phillips and his wife, Cynthia of Denver and Bob Phillips and his wife, Robin of Chickasha, Okla.; one brother, Dan Jones and his wife, Martha of Magazine; three grandchildren, Michelle Kooi of Loveland, Colo., David Jones of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Olivia Jones of Fort Smith; three stepgrandchildren, Connor and Ryan Phillips of Denver and Robbie Crosier of Chickasha, Okla.; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Kooi and Sage Kooi.
Robert graduated from Magazine High School in Magazine in 1938, graduated from Hendrix College in Conway with a bachelor of arts degree in 1942, was on the track team and debate team at Hendrix and won the state debate championship in 1942, graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville in 1948 with L.L.B. degree with honors, and was editor of the Arkansas Law Review 1947-48. He served in the Army from 1943 until 1946, including 27 months in the European Theater of Operations in World War II and was commissioned second lieutenant, Infantry in Europe; recalled to active service during the Korean War and served 21 months as a legal officer (First Lieutenant JAGC, USAR) from 1950-52. He was continuously engaged in the private practice of law in Fort Smith since 1948 with the exception of serving as a special assistant, U.S. attorney in 1950. He was a partner in the firm of Shaw, Jones & Shaw, Fort Smith from 1952-70 and since 1970 has been senior partner in the law firm of Jones, Jackson & Moll PLC (formerly Jones, Gilbreath & Jones). Robert was a member of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers. He was past president of the Sebastian County Bar Association, past Arkansas Bar Foundation and past president of Arkansas Bar Association. He served as a member of the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Jury Instructions from its creation in 1962-99, served as special associate justice, Arkansas Supreme Court, in 1970, awarded the Arkansas Bar Association's Outstanding Lawyer of the Year Award in 1978, the Arkansas Association of Defense Counsel, Outstanding Defense Attorney Award in 1992. He was listed in the publication "Best Lawyers in America" in civil trial practice in every issue of the publication since its inception; 1999 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the 8th Judicial Circuit. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith, taught Builders Sunday school class for more than 55 years, served on the administrative board of First United Methodist Church for many years and as chairman from 1968-70. Robert was currently a life member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army in Fort Smith, having been a member for approximately 30 years and served as chairman in 1973; has been active in scouting as Cubmaster, Assistant Scout Master, Institutional Representative and Merit Badge Counselor, and as a member of the board of Westark Area Council of Boy Scouts of America; past president of the Girl's Shelter; president of Alumni Association of Hendrix College 1968-69; president of Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith 1980-81; in 1997 he was awarded the Salvation Army's "Others" award in recognition of community service. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004, at First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith with interment at Roselawn cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Todd Kooi, David Jones, Danny Jones, Robert Jones, Arvid Bean, Ryan Bean, Randy Jackson and Mark Moll. Honorary pallbearers will be the Builders Sunday school class, Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, Sebastian County Bar Association and Arkansas Bar Association, Sebastian County Bar Association and Arkansas Bar Association.
