Sally
November 9, 1931 - August 23, 2017

Eighty-five years after Mrs. Sally Baum Shumate Frick was given to this world, a tireless servant to her family, friends, community, and her Lord, she was brought back home to her Savior on August 23, 2017. Throughout her long and distinguished life, she remained the epitome of beauty, grace, and class, and she leaves a legacy of generosity, faith, kindness, and love to everyone who had the honor to know her.

Above all else, Sally was a woman of deep and abiding faith that never waivered. Fervently committed to the Lord, and specifically to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, she dedicated her life to the mission of Christ's gospel in both word and deed. A tireless philanthropist and civic-oriented member in the community, Sally did not like to be recognized for her contributions, choosing instead to do the Lord's work in the humility and grace that defined her. Above all else, however, she showed Christ's love and acceptance to everyone she encountered, and her life of service stands as a testament to her gracious spirit. Sally's fierce commitment to her family was unmatched. Although small in stature, she displayed steadfast strength and dignity. Widowed at the age of thirty-nine, Sally singlehandedly raised her three children, worked full-time for Acme Brick Co. and others, and even continued to care for her former mother-in-law until her death. As Sally's family continued to grow over time, she remained intimately invested in the love and support of each generation.

Preceded in death by her mother, Mary North; her father, Charles Baum; and her first husband, William Earl Shumate,
Sally is survived by her husband, Elvin Frick; her three children, William Shumate, III of Bella Vista AR, David Shumate of Maumelle AR, and Diane Longo of Park City UT. In addition, Sally was blessed with nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, as well as five stepchildren, and through them eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Sally was a woman who loved life. She loved to dance and to laugh. She loved people, devoting the majority of her life to causes that helped those in need. She loved to travel the world, and she loved to sing. She was a committed gardener, bridge player, and never had an unkind word for anyone. She leaves behind a wealth of memories and love, and a beautiful family that carries on her tradition of grace, service, and generosity of spirit.

Sally's life was a life well lived. And, although they mourn their own loss, her family rejoices that she will finally receive the heavenly rewards she has so richly earned. The public is invited to celebrate her life with the family. Funeral mass will be held on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 10:00 AM in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, followed immediately by interment at Roselawn Cemetery in Fort Smith, all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Bryon Shumate, Duncan Shumate, Brad Lipscomb, Matt Gross, Brad Frick, David Pogue, and Nicholas Longo.
