Fred B. Hanna, 72, of Fayetteville went to be with the Lord on Sept. 15, 2004. He passed on peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife and children, after a brief but valiant fight with cancer.

Fred was born on Oct. 8, 1931, in Morrilton to Fred B. Hanna Sr. and Alberta Whitfield Hanna. He went to Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway from 1949-51, transferring to the University of Arkansas where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, graduating in 1953 with a bachelor of science in business and marketing. He then joined the U.S. Navy and married the love of his life, Anne Dougan of Little Rock, on Feb. 12, 1954. Together they made their home in Fayetteville, where he owned Hanna Gulf Station and then Hanna Marine. After selling his boat business, he entered various business endeavors.

He served as mayor of Fayetteville from 1992-2000. His accomplishments included the Fayetteville Free Trolley, New Animal Shelter, Town Center, Dickson Street Development, Gary Hampton Softball Complex, the new past office, "First Night" Festival, the new city library, "Lights of the Ozarks," and the annual mayor's prayer breakfast. He left the city of Fayetteville in much better fiscal condition than it was when he was first elected in 1992.

He was past president of the Fayetteville Jaycees and a member of the Fayetteville Planning Commission for nine years. He was retired and has served on the Arvest McIlroy Bank Board of Directors and was a board member of Haas Hall Academy. He and his wife were members of University Baptist Church. His greatest joy, however, was his wife of 50 years, Anne, and their five children and 10 grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, of the home; daughter, Stephanie Hanna Bryant and her husband, Doug of Bentonville; sons, Mark Hanna, Thad Hanna and wife Anita, and Brown Hanna, all of Fayetteville and son, Burt Hanna and his wife Donna of Springdale; his grandchildren are Ashley Bryant Morgan and her husband, Rocky of Clarksville, Blake Bryant of Waco, Texas, Coleman and Hanna Bryant of Bentonville, Lauren Hanna of Fayetteville, Trey Trent and Halley Hanna of Fayetteville, and Jake and Brooke Hanna of Springdale. He was greatly loved and will be missed by many.

A celebration of his life will be held at ll a.m. today, Sept. 17 at University Baptist Church with Pastor H.D. McCarty officiating.

Arrangements are by Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville.

Burial will be in Mount Comfort Cemetery.
