Tommie Mae Fitzgerald, 85, passed peacefully to her Savior, September 28, 2013 with her son and daughter-in-law by her side at their home.
She was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, August 27, 1928, the daughter of Ruben and Coralle (McDonald) Murphy. A graduate of El Dorado High School, she married John Fitzgerald on October 30, 1946.
After 56 years of marriage, John predeceased her on March 28, 2003. She was also predeceased by her parents, two sisters, Jane Murphy and Sarah (Jack) Taylor; and her son, Michael Garrett Fitzgerald predeceased her on February 14, 2006.
Tommie Mae was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church in El Dorado all her adult life. When she moved to North Carolina to live with her son Jerry in 2006, she began attending Oriental First Baptist Church, where she found a loving church family and especially enjoyed the music of the choir. We will always be grateful for the love she found there, especially from Dr. Jerry and Nancy Harper.
Tommie Mae is survived by her son, Jerry Wayne (Becky) Fitzgerald, of Oriental, NC and two grandchildren of New Bern, NC, Jon David (Amy) Fitzgerald and Anne (Ashley) Wood. She was blessed with two great-grandchildren: Kai Michael Wood and Ben Michael Fitzgerald, three step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, and her beloved dogs, Dallas and Lucy.
She was blessed by special friends throughout her life including Nell Rose Carter, Opal Knight, Doris Lowery, and Jo Conn.
There will be no services at this time and inurnment will take place at a later date in El Dorado. The family is grateful for the loving care Tommie received by the staff of Pamlico Medical Center, Grantsbrook Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and many others.
