Harold Dean Hyman, 94 of Camden, passed away on July 10, 2020. Born on November 5, 1925, in Banks, Arkansas, from the late Andrew M. “Jumbo” Hyman and Martha G. “Mattie” Kyser. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters, 2 brothers, and wife of 62 years, Maxine Patterson Hyman and his son Kenneth Randall “Randy” Hyman.

He is survived by his son H. David Hyman of Hot Springs, daughter-in-law Karen Hyman of Bryant, grandchildren; Sean Hyman (Lisa) of Little Elm, TX, Dawn Moulder (Keith) of McKinney, TX, Ami Chmielik (Martin) of Grants Pass, OR, Jodi Hetherington (Mark) of Republic, MO, Christina Drummond (Kevin) of Benton and James Ritchey of Spain; 9 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harold moved to Camden with his mother in 1942 after his father died at a young age. He helped his mother operate a café in Cullendale and became well-versed in pie-making until he left school in the 11th grade and enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1944. He was a provost sergeant, then a military policeman and a nose gunner in the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, where his crew nicknamed him “Arky.” He participated in a number of missions, including the Asiatic Pacific Theater, China Offensive, New Guinea, Luzon and Western Pacific Air Combat. His most-repeated story was the one where his crew was notified mid-flight that the war had ended and to go drop their bombs in the ocean and return to base. He received WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, AP Theater Ribbon, Silver Service Star and Philippine Liberation Ribbon and was the last surviving member of his flight crew.

After returning home, he married Maxine Patterson in 1945 and began work at Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1946. After 38 years of service he retired as a Network Services Supervisor Engineer. Some of his most memorable times in between were with his church, his children, hunting, fishing and being with his grandchildren. He was a deacon, church treasurer and music director at one time and spent many years of service as “handyman” as well. Thank you to all of his Hillside Baptist and Cullendale First Baptist Church friends who have stayed by his side through the years. A special thank you to lifelong friend Doris Beeson Faulkner, nephew Michael Hyman, Dave Webb, Burton Erber and Don Longino for going the extra mile and helping out whenever he needed anything.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cullendale First Baptist Church.

Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 2:30pm at Cullendale First Baptist Church with Dr. Wade Totty officiating. The service will be live streamed online and recorded to view later, for those that cannot attend.
