Mattie Ellen McKenzie, 99, died September 5, 2021. She was born May 26, 1922 in Ivy, AR to James Solomon and Mittie Ellen Nix Crow. When she was born, her father was 31 and her mother was 21. Mattie married William Andrew McKenzie on September 15, 1940. They had three children during their marriage, Ellen McKenzie Norwood, Jean McKenzie Word (Jimmy) of Camden, AR and James Andrew McKenzie (Shirley) of Ward, AR. She had nine grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Bill McKenzie; her parents, J. S. and Ellen Crow and a brother, William T. Crow.
Mattie and Bill loved to garden. They always planted big gardens and always shared the fruits of their labor with others. It was not uncommon for them to deliver their vegetables to others throughout the community. Mattie was a leader of several organizations throughout the years, including PTA and 4H and was active at her church, she was still teaching when in her nineties!
Mattie drove the school bus at Harmony Grove for many years. She was by far the most popular driver for field trips and sporting events. She would often take her grandchildren with her and they would ride on the box beside her before they were old enough to start school. So many wonderful memories were made of all the places she would go.
Proctor Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be 9:00–10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church. Services will be 10:00 with Don Phillips officiating followed by interment at Bethesda Cemetery.
