M. L. Johns, of Searcy, died June 28, 2017. He was born May 29, 1929 in Tuckerman, Arkansas to Melvin Lewis and Arrie C. (Springer) Johns. They later moved to Grubbs where he graduated from high school. While in school, he worked part-time for Mr. Sam Walton at his first five and dime store in Newport. When he told Mr. Walton after graduation that he would be going to St. Louis to Harris Teachers College, Mr. Walton asked him to stay on with him and he could teach him more than they could in St. Louis. However, M. L. told him that he could not see any future in a five and dime store. Needless to say, he took a lot of teasing later for that statement.
He served in the Army National Guard as SGT. After moving to St. Louis he was a Boy Scout Leader, Advisor to the Mehlville School Board and President of the Bierbaum PTA. He was on the Citizen Advisory Committee for St. Louis County. A faithful member of the Lemay Church of Christ for forty years. After retiring and moving to Searcy, he worked for the County 911 for 13 years and was a member of the West Side Church of Christ.
He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ima Lee (Morgan) Johns; daughters, Tracy E. (Johns) Adair, husband Rusty and Kelly L. (Johns) Ellis, husband Travis; grandchildren, Theresa Johns, Ricky Johns, Cody Adair, Chase Adair, Kristen Adair, Tyler Ellis and Bethany Ellis.
Preceded in death by two children, Lisa Robin (Johns) Williams and Joey David Johns; grandson, Larry Williams Jr.; his parents Melvin L. and Arrie C. Johns; three brothers, Rex, Ray and James (Blue Jay) Johns; five sisters, Gertrude Dye, Ruby Holmes, Grace Smith, Hazel Largent and Billie Jean Stacey.
Services will be held at Powell Funeral Home of Searcy. Visitation will be Saturday, July 1st at 9:30 a.m., followed by funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Gum Springs Cemetery.
