SPRINGDALE — Roy Richard Keyes Sr. died Thursday, May 22, 2014, in Fayetteville, Ark., at the age of 84. He was born June 5, 1929, in Riner, Wyo., to Roy Leath Keyes and Clara M. Englehard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma; his parents; three sisters and two brothers.

Roy served in the United States Coast Guard, in Atlantic City, N.J., for two years before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1951. Roy was both a Korean and Vietnam War veteran. Roy gave a lifetime of service to his country for over 20 years while he was a United States Marine. He retired from the USMC to 1971.

Roy and his family traveled and lived in many states and countries throughout his life. After retiring from the service he lived in El Salvador, Colo., and Oregon before returning to live in Arkansas to be near his family.

Roy had a passion for knowledge and loved learning. He enjoyed photography and writing. He had even written several manuscripts.

For the past several years he enjoyed getting to know his ever growing family. He loved to sit and watch the interactions of everyone. He was a quiet, gentle man, who loved the Lord and his family and who was loved by those who knew him.

Roy left a legacy of dedication to God, Family, and Country.

He is an everyday HERO in many ways and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

He is survived by a son, Roy Richard "Rick" Keyes Jr. and wife Margie of West Fork, Ark.; daughter, Carole Keyes Coley and husband Dan of Green Forest, Ark.; 11 grandchildren, Roy Richard "Ricky" Keyes III and wife Nicole, James Coley and Wife Corey, Teresa Coley Burton and husband Robby, Jamea Keyes Preston and husband Scott, Tony Coley Engel and husband Ed, Jason Coley and wife Sheila, Aaron Coley and wife Jerri, Adam Coley and wife Shami, Trent Keyes and wife Kelly, Aimee Coley Smith and husband Scott, Laura Keyes Pinnell and husband Bryan; 34 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, at the National Cemetery in Fayetteville. Online condolences can be expressed at www.rollinsfuneral.com.
