Mary Amanda Green Gilliland was born in Searcy, Arkansas, on May 26, 1910. She died November 23, 2011 at age 101.
Amanda was the fifth child and only daughter of Thomas Espy and Mary Ella "Mollie" Redus Green. Her brothers were William Archie, Thomas Alton, Joel Davis, and John Clark Green. Amanda's father died when she was eleven years old, so she and her mother lived with her brother, Archie, and his wife, Alice, until she graduated from high school and could go to work as a switchboard operator with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
After the telephone company, Amanda began working for White County as a deputy tax collector and then became a bookkeeper in the White County Clerk's office. She retired at age 83 and was honored by the White County Quoram Court for 39 years of service to the county.
Amanda married John Wesley "Hip" Gilliland in 1932. They were married forty years until his death in 1972. They were members of First United Methodist Church in Searcy, having joined in 1943.
In 2005 Amanda moved to Hot Springs Village to be near her daughter, Molly Ann. Amanda was a resident of Greenwood Manor, the assisted living center on the campus of the Good Samaritan Society. She lived for the last year in the Good Samaritan Health Center.
Amanda is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Molly and Therral Wilson, and by her grandchildren, Darrick and Julie Wilson of Little Rock, Melinda and Michael Barrett of Bryant, and Kyle Wilson of Los Angeles, CA. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Logan Wade and Shelby Amanda Wilson and Evan Michael and Ashley Ann Barrett.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at White County, Memorial Gardens in Searcy, Arkansas.
