Obituary:
Glenda Shannon Fewell, 73, of Little Rock, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at UAMS after a long battle with multiple myeloma. She was born in Vick, Arkansas on March 20, 1936, the first day of spring which signified the brightness and love she brought to her family and friends. Those who knew her will feel a real loss, but know that she is heaven’s gain.
Shannon graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College (now UCA) with a B.S.E. in Home Economics. After graduation, she served as a County Extension Agent and taught Home Economics at Jacksonville High School. In 1957, she married Bob Fewell, and when their son, Howard was born, she became a full time mother, homemaker and civic leader.
She gave of her time and talents to many organizations. Shannon served as president of the CARTI auxiliary and as chairman of the Festival of Trees for many years, president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Boys’ Club and was a founding member of Second Genesis. She was a long time member and held various offices in the Women’s Tennis Association and was a captain of the Pleasant Valley Country Club tennis team.
Shannon loved her church, Second Presbyterian, and served in many capacities, including being a Deacon. She had many gifts, one of which was gardening. She had a green thumb and was always rooting plants for her many friends. She leaves a living legacy of plants and flowers that started in her yard and are now growing in yards all over the state. Shannon also enjoyed decorating and was the first to be called when events required beautiful decorations. Her decorating talent was especially noted at the annual Christmas parties she held for her fellow Home Economics teachers.
Preceded in death by her parents, Jeff Davis and Bethel Harrod Pope of Bradley County, Shannon is survived by Howard and Bobby Fewell and granddaughters, BrookLynn and Shelby Fewell, of Little Rock; brother, Hoyle Pope of Greenville, Texas; and sisters, Hilda Thornton and husband, Leroy of Warren and Joyce Mann and husband, Hoyle of Camden. She also leaves behind four nephews and four nieces, five great-nephews and seven great-nieces, and a multitude of other family members who loved her dearly.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the oncology physicians and nurses at UAMS, particularly, Dr. Fritz Van Rhea, who provided loving care to Shannon during her last two years.
