Virgil "Tick" Spears, 85, of Dover, Ark., went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 9, 2015.
The son of Virgil and Ruth (Ward) Spears, he was born June 17, 1929 in Greenbrier. He attended Arkansas Polytechnic College. He married Betty Breeding on March 12, 1949 in Conway. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean War who served one tour in Japan. He was a former deacon and member of West Side Church of Christ in Russellville, Ark., where he helped to start Christeens Youth Forum, which hosts thousands of teenagers from across the nation every year. From 1976 to 1992, he and his wife owned Taco Villa in Russellville, Ark. It was said that "Tick" never met a stranger. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, hunting, raising cattle, visiting with family and especially spending time with grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and two brothers.
Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Betty Spears; brother, James "Cotton" Spears; daughters, Sherry Griffith and husband Jack, of Lamar, Ark. and Beverly Reid and husband Bruce, of Jerusalem, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.
Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at West Side Church of Christ in Russellville, Ark. Brother Dan Lightfoot will officiate.
Burial will be at Crestlawn Cemetery in Conway by Humphrey Funeral Service.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., on Tuesday at the funeral home.
