Early Sunday morning, September 08, 2013 Robert McKinney, loving father and husband, was called home to be with the Lord. Bob left Warren, AR, but never forgot his roots – building an A frame home along the Old Bradley Rd. He was born November 19, 1925 in Warren, AR; son of Roy Judson McKinney and Myrtle Roebuck. Survived by his wife of 24 years, Patricia Bilderback McKinney; and his children Roderic, Zachary and Pamela; and his grandchildren Garrett and Darcy Strobel, Zachary Robert McKinney, and Caroline and Connor McKinney. Also survived by his sister, Martha Joe Bolland and her three children, Judson, Mary Lou and Jim. Pre-deceased by his first wife of 37 years, Dorothy Mae Hildebrand. Having graduated High School in Warren, AR in 1942, Bob enlisted in the Army Air Corps to serve his country in WWII. Bob flew 20 missions as a flight engineer and top turret gunner over Europe in a B-24 Liberator, attached to the 460th Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force. As a decorated war veteran, he returned home and attended Hendrix College in Conway, AR. He joined the newly formed Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in 1947 as a security inspector at Los Alamos, NM. He was recalled to active duty from 1949 to 1953 and was subsequently transferred to Buffalo, NY where he served as a Convoy Commander for shipment of nuclear weapons to storage sites at various SAC bases around the nation. Rising to the rank of Colonel in the Army Reserves, Bob served tours of duty on Guam and other SAC bases to maintain AEC custody of high yield nuclear weapons as required by law to insure civilian control of the country’s nuclear capabilities. While in the Reserves, Bob attended the University of Maryland obtaining a degree in Business Administration and was transferred to the Office of the Secretary of the AEC, (the famous Dixy Lee Ray), as the nation focused on development of civilian nuclear energy. Bob and his family lived in Alexandria, VA for 21 years in Waynewood and the Ft. Hunt area. He served as an usher at Aldersgate Methodist Church and was active as a leader in the Boy Scouts. He retired in 1981 and traveled extensively between his homes in Warren, AR; Steamboat Springs, CO and Plantation, FL. Bob was a great outdoorsman and avid hunter, member of the Oakdale Hunting Club, the Sierra Club and belonged to the ELKS (BPOE) and the VFW. Services were held at Good Hope Methodist Church on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 2pm with Rev. John Kidwell officiating internment followed in the McKinney Cemetery. Arrangements by Frazer’s Funeral Home. Memorials preferred to the Sierra Club in Bob’s name.
