Elected Mayor of Little Rock in 1931 and served two terms. Oversaw part of President Roosevelt's New Deal programs during his term and broke ground for the Museum of Fine Arts building (now part of the Arkansas Arts Center building in MacArthur Park)

Mrs. Willie Oliver Knowlton, 83, of Tampa Florida, wife of the former Little Rock mayor, Horace A. Knowlton, Sr., died yesterday in Tampa. She was a native of Arkansas and formerly taught in Little Rock public schools. She had been a member of Second Baptist Church in Little Rock for 67 years. Knowlton was mayor of Little Rock from 1931 to 1935 and served as city clerk from 1920 to 1931. He was later employed by the Federal Housing Administration in Washington. He retired in 1947 and the Knowlton's moved to Tampa. Other survivors include a son, Dr. Horace A. Knowlton Jr. of Tampa, a daughter, Mrs. Charles L. Carder of Denver, Colorado, a sister, Mrs. Ernest Tipton, Sr., of Little Rock, four grandchildren and a great grandchild. The body will be returned to Little Rock where funeral arrangements will be announced by the Rubel Funeral Home. The family requests that no flowers be sent.
