*Obituary
God called a true southern gentleman home early on Wednesday, June 3, 2009. Walter Ed Scales (81) was born in Conway, Arkansas on November 13, 1927. Walter Ed played football and basketball for Conway High School, the Arkansas State Teachers College (University of Central Arkansas) and graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Journalism. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After working as a newspaper reporter in Hot Springs, Conway and Morrilton, he was Vice President of Public Relations of the Arkansas Farm Bureau. After retirement in 1990 after 34 years of service, he restored the home his grandparents built on Robinson Avenue in Conway and lived there for 11 years. Walter Ed was very proud of the Scales' home and its significance as listed on the National Historic Register of Places. Walter Ed served in the United States Navy for two years and retired as a Major in the Arkansas National Guard. Walter Ed was an avid golfer and member of the Little Rock and Conway Rotary Clubs for many years. He will be remembered by his hunting compadres at the Rodgers Estate Hunting Club and members of the Winfield United Methodist Church in Little Rock and the United Methodist Church in Conway. PaPa was a loving and dedicated father to his three daughters and a doting and encouraging grandfather to his grandchildren.

Walter Ed Scales was predeceased by his parents Walter Ola and Gussie Simpson Scales, and his first wife, Sue Benton Scales. He is survived by wife Iris Jean Butler Scales, Suann Scales Haupt (Murray) of Little Rock, Christy Scales Casillas (Robert) of Galloway, Ohio, and Leslie Scales Dunn (Pete) of North Little Rock. He is survived by 4 grandchildren, Nick Barsotti (Laurie), Erin Kaiser, Elizabeth Stripling and Lauren Casillas. He is also survived by his aunt, 100 year old Cornelia Scales also of Conway.

The family gives a special thanks to Arkansas Hospice and the caregivers who helped Dad this Spring: Jennifer, Carol, Beverly, Charlotte, Wayne, Rina, Ashton and Diane. Thanks also to Patty for her love and care.
