Hallie Kent Shurgar Shell died peaceably on Tuesday evening, May 28, 2002, in the Conway Regional Medical Center following a two-year battle with cancer. Hallie was born in Little Rock on June 17, 1968, the daughter of Kay Rose and W. G. Shurgar III. She attended public school in Little Rock and graduated from Hall High School in 1986. Following her graduation, she entered Hendrix College in Conway, and graduated in 1990 with a B.A. in Psychology. She then entered the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Master's program and received her degree with honors in Early Childhood Development in 1993. On the 25th of April, 1992, Hallie and Philip Andrew Shell were married in Trinity Cathedral in Little Rock, and they established their home in Conway at that time. Hallie began her teaching career at the Greenbrier Elementary School and also taught at the First Presbyterian Preschool in Conway. She left the teaching profession for her preferred career as a wife and mother. During her ten years of residence in Conway, she has had a very real impact on the community and her church. Hallie taught Sunday School at First Presbyterian for years, she chaired the Vacation Bible School and was a part of the Ruth Floyd Ringers' hand bell choir. Her community involvements include acting as chairman of the 1999 Toad Suck Daze Festival. She served on the Conway Cradle Care as a board member, as well as other boards and committees in the community.
In addition to her husband and her parents, two sons, John Will Kent and Gordon Rees-Jones Shell; her sister and brother-in-law, Page Shurgar and Chris Gibson, of Kingston, (Madison County) Arkansas; her grandmothers, Mrs. Kent Rose of Little Rock, and Mrs. W. G. Shurgar, Jr. of Tollville, (Prairie County) Arkansas survive Hallie, in addition to a host of family and friends all across the United States. A graveside service at Oak Grove Cemetery in Conway will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2002. A memorial service and celebration of her life will follow at First Presbyterian Church, 2400 Prince Street, in Conway, at 2:00 p.m. Family visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 30th. Pallbearers will be Porter Brownlee, Bill Johnson, Terry Love, Martin Moix, Michael Murphy, and Bill Olson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Timothy Atha, Brad Cole, Clifton Ford, Dr. Tyrone Lee, Paul Moore, Dallas Snider, James Stewart, and Clayton and Thomas Vinson.
