Altha Leola (Fraser) Miller, age 94, of Augusta, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011. She was born Jan. 6, 1917 in Union Hill, Ark. to W.T. & Dora (Curtis) Fraser, and spent the early years of life there as the adored only daughter with four brothers. Her family moved to Fakes Chapel and she attended school there and in McCrory. She met Bill Miller when she moved to Augusta to work in the County Health Office. They were married for 58 years before his death in 1998. She raised five children and spent many volunteer hours on their behalf serving as a band mother, in the local PTA, and enduring the noise of piano and band instruments being played in her household. Mrs. Miller was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church. She taught a Sunday school class for women, and served as the church pianist until age 93. After her children were grown, she began keeping a daily prayer journal. Her notes in the journals included comments on family events and news events and an ongoing story of her personal faith journey. These journals are a cherished part of her legacy to her children. She used her love of writing to encourage others in many ways. She enjoyed corresponding with people. She wrote often to family members and friends and children of friends, and expanded her correspondence to include friends of her grown children, her favorite radio and television preachers, newspaper columnists whose writing she enjoyed, and many others who were total strangers. Many of them began to write back to her, and she loved sharing the letters she had received from her correspondents. She wrote articles about her early days and wrote stories about her life for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her children fondly remember her sense of humor and her love of life. Even as she approached the last few days of her life and could no longer communicate verbally, she would get that impish twinkle in her eye that let us know she was thinking of a good one-liner. She saw beauty in the world around her, and the face of God in each child who was lucky enough to cross her path. Our mother's love was and always has been our best example of God's unconditional love for us. The life she lived has given us a grand example of profound faith, and with the writer of Proverbs, her children arise and call her blessed. Mrs. Miller is survived by two sons, William C. "B.C." Miller of Augusta, Paul Miller (Georgie) of Skokie, Ill.; three daughters, Claire Miller Rowland (Tim) of Searcy, June Smith (Hal) of La Jolla, Calif., Mary Alfred (Wayne) of Chester, Va.; two grandchildren, William Miller, Melanie Renault (Pascal); two great-grandchildren, Sebastien & Madeline Renault; Host of Nieces & Nephews. Visitation is Monday 6-8 p.m. with service, Tuesday, 10 a.m., Rhodes Chapel, Augusta. Burial at Augusta Memorial Park. Arrangements by Rhodes & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Arkansas Sheriffs' Youth Ranches, P.O. Box 3964, Batesville, Ark. 72503, Grace Baptist Church, P.O. Box 314, Augusta, Ark. 72006 or Woodruff County Health Center, 139 W. Highway 64, McCrory, Ark. 72101.
