Mrs. Mildred Sarah Lawrence Mayo, 96, of Blytheville, Ark., the widow of Lewis E. Mayo, Sr., died Monday, July 28, 2008, at her home. Born July 23, 1912, in Avert, to the late Henry and Elizabeth Lawrence, she had resided in Blytheville for the last 53 years, having moved there with her family from Parma. She had resided with her daughter for the last 30 years of her life in Blytheville.
Mrs. Mayo lived her life for her family and doing as much as possible to help others. According to her loved ones, she was a wonderful mother and her kindness to others was beyond comparison. She loved the Lord and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, a member and past Matron of Honor of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, and served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross for over 25 years at the hospital and nursing home in Blytheville. The family said that she was still preparing meals, cleaning her home and doing her own yard work until she was 85 years old. She grew beautiful roses of all colors of which she would arrange in lovely bouquets and take them to the hospital and nursing home to share their beauty with others. She also loved to bake and on special occasions and holidays would take the delicious candies, cakes and cookies to the hospital employees. This was one of the greatest joys during her life along with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Everett and Wayne Lawrence of Bloomfield, and John, Richard and Clifford Lawrence of Flint, Mich.; three sisters, Ethel Walker and Evelina Lawrence of Bloomfield; and Effie Immel of Evansville, Ind.; two sons, Jerry James Mayo, Sr. and Lewis Earl Mayo, Jr. of Blytheville; one granddaughter, Cathy Mayo of Houston, Texas; and two infant great-grandchildren, Emily Pauline Lovelace and Larry Dean Lovelace III of Blytheville.
Mrs. Mayo is survived by one son, Terry Henry Mayo and his wife Maruska of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Norma Jean Mayo Deguise and her husband Dr. Robert F. Deguise of Peoria, Ill., and Mae Elizabeth Mayo Lovelace and her husband, Larry, of Blytheville, Ark.; and a very special daughter-in-law, Erma Jean Brannon Mayo, wife of the late Jerry James Mayo, Sr. of Blytheville, Ark.; six grandsons, Dr. Brian Deguise and his wife Barbara of Peoria, Ill., Dr. J. J. Mayo, Jr. and his wife Jayme of Conway, Ark., Dr. Mark L. Mayo and his wife Abigail of Houston, Texas, TSgt Lewis E. Mayo III and his wife Lynn of Las Vegas, Nev., Larry D. Lovelace II and his wife Sevin of Blytheville, Ark. and R. Alan Lovelace and his wife, Sheila, of Shelbyville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Michelle Mayo Becker of Houston, Texas, and Linda Beth Mayo Stanfill and her husband Grady of McKenzie, Tenn.; five great-grandsons, Jonathan and Holden Stanfill of McKenzie, Tenn., Daniel A. and Nathan L. Lovelace of Shelbyville, Tenn., and Jack Terry Mayo of Houston, Texas; six great-granddaughters, Brittney Wixon of McKenzie, Tenn., Sabrina Lovelace of Blytheville, Ark., Jessica Lehmann and Lily Catherine Mayo of Houston, Texas, Kaylee Lynn Mayo of Las Vegas, Nev., and Elizabeth Renee Lovelace of Shelbyville, Tenn.; and many wonderful nieces and nephews that she dearly loved. Mrs. Mayo's love of God and family was the essence of her life. Her family and friends with love will always remember her and her strength will carry on throughout her generations.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Blytheville, Ark., with Bro. Mike Welch officiating. Mrs. Mayo was laid to rest beside her late husband. No visitation was held. The family requests memorials be made to Trinity Baptist Church, Blytheville, Ark.; the SIDS Foundation of America, the Veterans Administration of America, or the Arthritis Foundation of America. Cobb Funeral Home of Blytheville is in charge of arrangements.
