Brooks-Baxter War
February 28, 1848-December 8, 1921

Enoch H was a son of Enoch H. and Lucinda Massey Vance. He was given the rank of Colonel during the Brooks-Baxter War, which occurred during April and May of 1874.
The Brooks-Baxter War occurred when a dispute occurred over who was actually elected as governor of Arkansas -- Elisha Baxter or Joseph Brooks. On May 15, 1874, President Grant announced that he recognized Baxter as the governor of Arkansas and ordered Brooks' supporters to disperse. Elisha Baxter became the governor and was the last Republican governor of Arkansas until Winthrop Rockefeller was elected in 1967.
