Nathan Warren "UNCLE NASE" Arkansas first Black Legislator & Political Activists 1865. Born a slave in 1812, came to Arkansas as a slave of Robert Crittenden first Secretary of Arkansas Territory.
Warren purchased his freedom in 1834 and the freedom of other family members. He purchased the freedom of his brother James in 1844 from Timothy Crittenden.
Warren was a Member of Prince Hall Masons, a grocer(1870),a baker(1872) and owner of his own confectionery(1880). He composed music, authored dozens of black spirituals, He was known as Little Rock's Fiddler, he play at both black and white dances.
Warren was founder of Bethel AME church in 1863,located at 9th and Broadway Street, Little Rock.
Warren died June 3,1888 his funeral was conducted in the Masonic tradition at Bethel Church. An obelisk was erected by his Masonic lodge to mark his grave at Mt. Holly Cemetery. The obelisk was removed by cemetery authorities without notification or explanation to the family during the Jim Crow era. Warren now lies in an unmarked grave.
Prince Hall Masons again laid a grave marker and did a dedication ceremony on Nov 9th,2013.
