He was made a Mason in the winter of 1863 in Columbia County, Arkansas, while in winter quarters as a Confederate Soldier by Sterling Price Army Lodge. He was exalted to the degree of Royal Arch in Woodlawn Chapter the same winter, and in the spring of 1863 received the Royal and Select Degrees at Monticello. He was a Mason. He was, for many years, steward of the church and also Supt. of Sunday School. He was a friend and counselor of the pastor. Rev. J. L. Batten stated, "I have been in the ministry more than 40 years and have never known a more princely man in his home. His family seemed perfect. He was adored by his children and all seemed to move in his home like clock work. Col. Scott is gone from us. His peace cannot be filled at present. He departed his life on June 5, 1917. His Christian wife preceded him to Heaven, having departed this life on November 11,1902. He leaves 6 children, 2 sons and 4 daughters, all Christians, to mourn his departure. "The writer of this article Rev. J.L. Batten conducted his funeral, by special request of Col. Scott. He is buried in the Crossroads Cemetery, Lawrence County, Confederate Veteran, Portia, Arkansas.

He was a Lt. Col. in the Confederate Army. He joined in Missouri and was mustered out at St. Louis, Missouri. Union forces kept his horse and he had to walk almost 200 miles home.

Rev. Thacker officiated the wedding of Col Scott and Miss Ellen M. Sanders in Richwoods, Lawrence County, Arkansas.

This was a note in "The Blade" Newspaper on July 17, 1903:
T.J. Scott, the Portia melon hustler, will leave for Kansas City to dispose of melons about August 1, 1903. William DeArman will buy the melons at this end of the line. The melon crop is fully two weeks late.
He was Mayor of Portia, Arkansas in 1904.
