PRIVATE CSA
Civil War Confederate
December 24, 1834 - October 30, 1892
Husband of (1) Elizabeth Davis (marr. 23 Dec. 1852), (2) Mrs. Isabella Mahala Willis Cooper, (3) Mrs. Emily Rutledge; son of James and Mary Beasley McCarroll.
The following was taken from John Richard McCarroll (1989), Descendants of Nathaniel and John McCarroll: "Soon after the outbreak of the Civil War, John McCarroll enlisted in the Confederate Army in response to Colonel Borland's call of November 5, 1861. He was assigned to Company K, 1st Regiment, Arkansas 30-day Volunteers,
commanded by Captain L. W. Robertson. He was stationed at Camp Borland near Pocahontas,
Arkansas. He was discharged on December 11, 1861, and returned home to his family. He was again enlisted on July 12, 1862, in Smithville, Arkansas by Captain M. D. Baber as a Private in Company D, 38th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, commanded by Colonel R. G. Shaver. This unit was sometimes referred to as the 38th Arkansas, sometimes the 31st Arkansas, and sometimes as Shaver's Infantry.
This unit was a part of General Sterling Price's Army. Stories that were passed down through the years were that John McCarroll was captured in July, 1863, and before being moved north to a prison camp, he and two other soldiers escaped by swimming the river. It is doubtful that John Rhea McCarroll ever returned to his assigned unit, as he was shown as having deserted in July, 1863. It was told that he was in General Price's raid on Pilot Knob, Missouri in the Fall of 1864, and that he surrendered with his unit at Jacksonport, Arkansas on June 5, 1865."
This John McCarroll was a grandson of Nathaniel McCarroll, the Revolutionary War soldier for whom a memorial marker was placed in Old Bethel Memorial Cemetery.
