Francis Nelson Page was born in Gloucester County, Virginia as the oldest son of Mann and Judith Nelson Page. After graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1841 he was commissioned a lieutenant and served in the Seminole Wars in Florida. Following two years of adjutant duty he saw service in the Mexican War and received brevet of first lieutenant for heroic conduct in the defense of Fort Brown, Texas. He was brevetted major for gallant and meritorious conduct at the battles of Contreras and Cherubusco. On February 25, 1851 he married Susan Duval, daughter of Colonel William Duval of Florida. He died at Fort Smith, Arkansas at the age of forty years.
