Civil War Confederate
1827 - December 7, 1862

Section 4 Site 1822

Alexander Early Steen was born in Missouri and a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was a career soldier in the United States Army and first served at Jefferson Barracks in St Louis from 1846 until 1850. On April 27, 1848 he married Georgiana Morrison in St Louis, Missouri. He was then transferred to the frontier where he fought hostile Indians from Fort Union in the New Mexico Territory with the 3rd United States Cavalry and was promoted to first lieutenant. He was the commander of the Third Infantry at Fort Garland, Colorado from July 10, 1859 through July 28, 1860. When the Civil War broke out he resigned from the army and returned to Missouri. Missouri made an effort to remain neutral in the war, but many had to choose sides when the pro-Confederate forces began to clash with the federal authorities and it became obvious there was going to be fighting. In March of 1861 Steen accepted a commission of captain in the regular Confederate Army’s Corps of Infantry. He was also appointed a brigadier general in the Missouri State Guard and was made the first commander of the Tenth Missouri Infantry. On September 2, 1861 General Steen’s forces engaged Union forces from Fort Scott, Kansas and drove them out of the Missouri counties bordering Kansas. During the bloody Battle of Prairie Grove in Washington County, Arkansas in December of 1862 General Steen was killed, his body recovered and shipped to Fort Smith.
