JOHN WESLEY BATES, age 45, of Dumas, Arkansas, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at his home near Dumas.

He was a son of Donnie Sue Patterson Bates of Dumas and the late Lamar "Monk" Bates.

He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Warren Patterson and Lida McTigrit Patterson and Luther Bates and Vera Tucker Bates.

John was a 1976 graduate of Dumas High School and was a former member of North Side Missionary Baptist Church and later as a member of Anderson Chapel Baptist Church of the Dumas area.

He was a long-time employee of the Dollar General Warehouse, Bassett furniture factory, and was most recently employed at Wal-Mart Stores in Dumas, Arkansas.

He enjoyed fishing, playing dominoes and watching baseball at the local ballpark.

John fought a valiant and brave battle with cancer and did not let the infirmity rob him of enjoying life to the very end. His love for his wife and family will leave a lasting legacy to carry on through them and in their memories forever.

Other survivors include his wife, Pamela Kay McDaniel Bates, three children, Leah James, Andrew James and Ashley Bates; his step-mother, Ana Louise Bates of McGehee; four brothers, Danny Bates of Bastrop, Louisiana, David Bates of Deer Park, Texas, Keith Bates and Danny "Dee" Chance, both of Dumas; and two sisters, Sharon Kay Bates Harris and Leslie Chance Paquin, both of Dumas.

Funeral services was held 4:00 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Anderson Chapel Baptist Church west of Dumas, with burial and interment at the Tyro Cemetery in Tyro, Arkansas.
