Mountaineer Echo Newspaper Week of July 17, 2003 issue: Four people were killed and four injured late Saturday morning in a grinding head-on accident on Hwy. 62, just east of Yellville near the Farm Bureau Insurance office. The accident claimed the lives of a Midway man and his two sons as well as the drive of the van that hit them. Robert S. BRANNAM, 40, and his son Robert BRANNAM, Jr., age 8, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another son, Joseph C. BRANNAM, age 10, died at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison while in route to a Springfield hospital. Darren WEILLIAMS, Sr., 38 of Mountain Home, was also pronounced dead at the scene. According to a report from the Arkansas State Police, WILLIAMS was eastbound on Hwy. 62 in a full-size 1989 Ford van when he crossed the centerline and side-swiped a westbound trailer being towed by Todd MOTT of Flippin and then hit BRANNAM's Ford mini-van head on. BRANNAM's van was partially off the pavement on the shoulder of the highway, indicating that he was trying to swerve to his right to avoid the collision. The collision between the vans flattened both front-ends as they hit almost headlight ot headlight. BRANNAM's wife, Linda was transported to Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain where her condition as of Tuesday after was listed as critical. Two passengers in the WILLIAMS van, Dongrol SPRAGGINS, 36, and 16 year-old Christopher SPRAGGINS of Summit were injured and transported to BRMC. The younger SPRAGGINS, was later transported to BRMC where he was treated and released. A dog in the BRANNAM van was also killed in the accident. The accident shut down both lanes of the highway for nearly two hours forcing traffic for Hwy. 62 and Highway 14 to be diverted through Summit. The Flippin Police Department blocked the 62/178 intersection routing westbound traffic up 178 to Hwy. 202. The Arkansas State Police are continuing the investigation into the accident. A blood sample from the WILLIAMS was sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab for analysis. The ASP were assisted at the scene by the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officer, Flippin Police, Yellville VFD, Flippin VFD, and ambulance crews from Baxter Regional Medical Center, North Arkansas Regional Medical Center and AirEvac Lifeteam.
