PENDERGRASS, Charles O. - This community was saddened Thursday afternoon of last week by a telegram announcing the death of C.O. Pendergrass, which occurred that morning at Norman, Oklahoma. The remains arrived Friday night, accompanied by Mr.and Mrs. J.G. Pendergrass, parents of the deceased. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. Autry. The remains were interred in Bluff Cemetery under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias. C.O. Pendergrass was born in Yell County, this state, January 1, 1876, being the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Pendergrass. In 1894 the family came to Springdale where they have since resided. On July 21 of last year Charley had a hemorrhage of the lungs, and it soon developed that consumption had seized upon him as a victim. He had every attention possible and made a trip to Nebraska hoping that the change would be beneficial but this hope was futile. A few weeks ago, he, in company with his parents, went to Norman, Oklahoma; where a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pendergrass resides. It was known then that Charley could never recover, but it was thought the trip might prolong his life for a few short days. A number of friends were at the depot to bid him farewell and all realized that he was going away to die, but he was cheerful and spoke of the time when he should return. Probably no young man in Springdale was more universally like than Charley Pendergrass. For several months he was a salesman in the New York Store, and he was at all times pleasant and affable. He always had a kind word and a pleasant smile for everyone and while he was a favorite among the young people, his friends were among all classes. When his illness came upon him he bore himself bravely, was always cheerful and full of hope. He was a model son, kind and affectionate, and devoted to his parents, and his greatest ambition seemed to be to make them comfortable and happy. In their bereavement they have the sympathy of the entire community. Charley had been a member of the Baptist church since 1889, having been converted in a meeting at Morrilton conducted by the late Maj. Penn, of Eureka Springs. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias and A.O.U., carrying good life insurance in the latter order. Mr. and Mrs. Pendergrass wish through the News to extend their thanks to their friends for their kindness during the illness of their son. J.P. Pendergrass on Saturday received a check for $ 2,000, the amount of insurance carried by his deceased son, Charles, in the A.O.U.W. lodge at Norman, Oklahoma. The A.O.U.W. is one of the best beneficiary organizations extant. Its claims are always paid promptly in full without any quibling.
