G. W. Cornelius aged 89 died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Lucy Smith Thursday night January 8, of paralysis and other ailments due to his advanced age. Born in Kentucky, he came to Arkansas when a young man and settled near Lunenburg. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War and served under General Marmaduke in many of the battles in the state. He was present when that general killed General Walker in a duel near Little Rock and is the last survivor of the witnesses to what was probably the last duel fought on Arkansas soil. He had been in poor health for a number of years, the last two of which found him an invalid. He was stricken with paralysis some three weeks ago and his condition had grown steadily worse until the end came at ten o'clock. He is survived by one brother, John Cornelius of Thayer, Missouri; three daughters Mrs Lucy Smith of Melbourne, Mrs Nanny Marchant of Dodd City, Texas and Mrs Lena Worley of Byers, Texas.
