Civil War
ca. 1835 - July 17, 1873
Husband of Sarah J. Courtney
John and Sarah's son, James, was born about 1860 in Tennessee.
There were four persons from the State of Tennessee with the name John Courtney who fought in the Civil War. Two of them fought for the Confederacy, the other two were Unionists. Their ranks and service units were:
PVT Co B 61 TN Mounted Infantry (Pitts' Regiment, 81 TN Infantry)
PVT Co D 39 TN Mounted Infantry (Bradford's Regiment)
PVT Co C 2 TN Mounted Infantry (Union)
PVT Co A 8 TN Cavalry (Union)
