Wiley POE

Appleton Cemetery
Pope County,
Arkansas

abt 1830 - 26 Feb 1857

Record of deaths in Sulpher Springs (Appleton) Cumberland Presby. Church pg. 26 shows a black slave boy owned by Josephus Poe, named Wiley Blackboy who died about age 28 on 2/26/1857. Family story is that Wiley and his family were freed after the Civil War but that they did not wish to leave Josephus. When Wileys parents died, he became a member of Josephus' family. Wiley is buried in the church yard of the Appleton Church of which he was also a member.

William Everett Lewis and his wife Kate Poe had a new stone made for Wiley Black Boy Poe at the Appleton Cemetery. After Josephus Poe died, Wiley lived with Jeff and Kate until he died.
