Hilda Ruth Stroud died Friday, February 27, 2004, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was 87 years old. Hilda, as she insisted friends and co-workers alike call her, attended college and eventually returned to Fort Smith in 1968. She joined the Times Record in January 1969 as a part-time promotion and marketing specialist and quickly became the primary market information voice of this region. Her carefully researched statistics and marketing publications for the Times Record were circulated nationwide and helped attract indusstries and create jobs for people in her community. But more than that, Hilda was a special person to whom others turned for help, understanding and advice. Her sincere interest in people inside and outside the newspaper made her a trusted, loyal and deeply appreciated friend. "She taught me what it was to work" said Times Record classified manager Julie Newman. "She taught a lot of us that." "She was a mentor for numerous people at the paper always willing to help. She was very proper on everything," said account executive Vicki Marts. Hilda retired from the Times Record January 25, 1985, to take care of her ageing mother. She served as a volunteer for Project Compassion and later as its director, stepping in following the death of her predecessor. Girlfriend, as she called everyone, will be missed.
