Ira Fulton Jones, Jr. died Tuesday, May 6, 2014. He was born January 17, 1927 to Dr. Ira Fulton and Mary Virginia Norris Jones. He graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1944. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corp Cadet program. After the Cadet program was cancelled he entered the Army Air Corp as ground personnel. He served a year at Templehof Airdrome in Berlin, Germany. After returning he attended and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a BSBA degree. At Arkansas he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. After graduation he married a Razorback beauty, Joanne Campbell, from Blytheville, AR. After graduation he worked for Berry Dry Goods Co. He later started a wholesale toy business. Opportunity led him to liquidate his wholesale business and enter the retail business with the purchase of Ben Franklin stores in Fort Smith. He served on the Regional and National advisory boards of Ben Franklin Stores. After closing his last store he worked part time for Coleman Pharmacy in Fort Smith. He was a member and Past President of the Noon Exchange Club and twice served as president of the board of the Girls Shelter in Fort Smith and also served on the Salvation Army Board and the Abilities Unlimited Board. He was active in the First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith having served as Chairman of both Finance and Trustees. He was also a 50+ year usher. He was an avid aviator with a commercial license with instrument rating. He was previously a Certified Flight Instructor and also a member of the Quiet Bird. He is survived by his wife Joanne, their son Rusty and daughter-in-law Sherry and sister Virginia Calhoun of Temple, Texas. He was preceded in death by daughter, Becky Jones Moore and brother Charlie Jones. A memorial service will be held Friday, 11:00 A.M. at Roebuck Chapel.
Private interment will preceed the Memorial Service at Roselawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Backpack Buddy Program of the Community Services Clearinghouse in Fort Smith. Family will visit in the Northex after the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Freeze, John Beasley, present and past ushers FUMC Traditional Services. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lewis-Roberts Funeral Chapel.
