Fayetteville Democrat
Thursday, February 28, 1886
SKELTON, Polly - Died of Pneumonia at her home two miles north of Fayetteville on the morning of the 16th of February 1886, Mrs. Polly Skelton, in the 80th year of her age. The deceased was well and favorably known to all the old settlers of this county. She and her husband, Wm. Skelton, came from Tennessee to this county in the summer of 1830 and built a cabin in the woods where the old Dutchman Smith's garden - now owned by John Jacobson - is located. She had lived within sight of where she first settled for 55 years. She was the mother of 10 children, all of whom lived to be grown up men and women. She had three sons and seven daughters. All of her sons went into the Confederate army. One was killed in the battle of Elk Horn and one in the battle of Corinth, Miss. John Skelton, her oldest son, yet lives near Fayetteville. She was buried at the Mt. Comfort grave yard Wednesday at 11 o'clock.
