Jerry Don Byers went to be with our Heavenly Father on May 18th, 2020 at his home in Lutz, Florida. Born in Hope, Arkansas on June 27th, 1939, he was one of the nine children born to Orie and Opal Davis Byers. Jerry grew up in Hope and graduated from Hope High School in 1957. Jerry graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. That same year he married Betty Lou Walters from Pine Bluff on November 23, 1961.

Jerry began his career with Gulf Oil Corporation in 1961. This took him to Port Arthur (Texas), Cincinnati (Ohio), Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) and Houston (Texas). After twenty-four years with Gulf Oil, he joined Mobil Oil Corporation in 1985. The next ten years Jerry worked at the Mobil Research Center in Pennington, New Jersey. While with Mobil Oil, he had the opportunity to travel to various places around the world. Jerry was a member of ASME B31.3 Piping Committee, where he served as Chairman from 1999-2002.

Jerry partially retired in 2000 while living in Dallas, Texas, but continued contract work that took him to Japan, France and various locations in the Middle East. In 2010 Jerry and Betty moved to The Villages in Florida to be near their grandchildren.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Orie and Opal Davis Byers, sisters’ Juanita Byers, Iris Jean Bohannon and brothers’ Raymond Byers, Dorsey Byers and Jimmy Byers. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Betty Byers, son Don Allen Byers and daughter-in-law Melina Haeussler Byers. He was Papa to his two grandchildren, Brandon Allen Byers and Madeline Starr Byers. At the time of his passing last May, he was survived by his sisters’ Laveta Greeson Norris and Sandra Massanelli with her husband Vic as well as brother Dubs Byers and his wife Jane. His sister Laveta Greeson Norris has also since passed away.

Jerry was a member of Westtown Presbyterian Church in Tampa, Florida. He loved going to church and sitting with Mimi (Betty), Don, Melina, Brandon and Maddie.

Graveside service will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Hope, Arkansas on Monday June 7th, 2021, at 2 p.m. To be led by his brother Dubs Byers, under the direction of the Hendon-Fuqua Funeral Home.
