September 29, 1843 - June 20, 1914

John M. Lucey was born in Troy, New York, and he and his family moved to Arkansas in 1847, settling in Fort Smith. During the War Between the States he enlisted in Company A (Fort Smith Rifles), Third Regiment Arkansas Infantry, Confederate States Army. He participated in the battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri (Aug. 10, 1861). Later in the war he was transferred to the Quartermaster's Department, C.S.A., taken prisoner in 1864, and paroled. After the war, he attended Fordham University (New York City), graduating in 1868, then entered Mount Saint Mary's Theological Seminary (Cincinnati, Ohio). Before completing the seminary, his health deteriorated and he returned to Fort Smith, where he became principal of the high school. When his health improved, he was ordained a priest of the Catholic Church in Fort Smith, Nov. 14, 1872, and was appointed pastor at Pine Bluff. He labored there for almost a half of a century. In 1902-03, he traveled around the world, visiting several Asian countries, the Holy Land, and European countries. In 1903, Pope Pius X elevated Father Lucey a Monsignor. In addition to his religious duties, in the early 1890s he helped plan Confederate veterans camps in Arkansas, prepared a book titled THE CONFEDERATE WOMEN OF ARKANSAS, and was Chaplain-General of the Arkansas Division, United Confederate Veterans (U.C.V.) and Chaplain on the staff of General Cabell, Trans-Mississippi Department, U.C.V.
