Heaven opened its gate today, April 17, 2020, and God welcomed His servant, Sherman Ely (Ed) Payne, home. Sherman was 78 years old and lived in Dover, Arkansas for 41 years after retiring from the United States Army. He was born on September 18, 1941, to George Olif Payne and Jennie Geneva (Smith) Payne in Danville, AR.

Sherman met his beautiful bride, Barbara Sue (Farris) Payne at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in 1960, as a new recruit. He was a member of Hatley Missionary Baptist Church in Dover. He loved his church and his church family. Sherman retired as a SFC from the US Army after 20 years of service, which included serving in Vietnam, and stationed on numerous other Army bases around the world. After retiring from the Army, Sherman worked at Arkansas Nuclear One for ten years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years; four children: Roger W. Payne (Monika) of Tenino, Washington; Sheri Mitzel of Russellville; Susan Cook (Mitch) of Pottsville; and John Payne of Dover; five grandchildren: Sarah Battin (Noel) and Amy Grayless (Kevin) of Washington; Joseph Mitzel of Alaska; Tyler Cook (Brittany) of Pottsville; and Hunter Waldee (Cameron) of Pottsville; seven great grandchildren: Brayden Grayless, Chloe Grayless, Elyse Mitzel, Ely Mitzel, Emily Battin, Addison Battin, and Ryleigh Cook; his brother, Glen Payne of Oklahoma; and two sisters, Pat Owen of Dardanelle, and Sandy Koch of North Little Rock.

A private graveside burial with military honors will be held at McFadden Cemetery in Dover, with Bro. Allen Blackford officiating under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service. A memorial service is planned at a later date. Pallbearers are John Payne, Mitchell Cook, Stan Mitzel, Tyler Cook, Cameron Waldee, and Reuben Brown. Honorary pallbearers are Roger Payne and Joseph Mitzel.
