Born in Tipton County, Tenn. Jan. 28,1832. He was admitted to the Bar in 1857 at Fayette County, Tx. by Judge James A. Ball. He returned to Tenn. and married Sallie Melton that same year. Moved to Arkansas before 1861. When Ark. seceded he enlisted with Capt. Gray's Ark. Inf. as a 2nd Lt. and later a Capt. in Co.E, 8th Ark. Inf. after the war he moved his family to Helena, Ark. then from 1880-1885 he bought land in Lonoke County. His wife Sallie having died in 1877 remarried in 1876 to a Rebecca Cobb of Lonoke Co. Wm. Turnage died Aug. 23, 1889 at Beebe, Ark. The Masonic Lodge assisted with the funeral as he was said to have been a 32nd degree Mason.
