January 12, 1936 - February 21, 2020
Alvernon was born January 12, 1936 in Loann, AR to Louie and Evelyn McHenry. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1954. He was assigned to Paris, France where he served as a supply clerk and a 3rd baseman for the Air Force baseball team in Europe.
Alvernon enrolled in the Philander Smith College to complete his degree. After graduation, he married the love of his life and began his teaqching career. He taught in the Stephens, McRae, Hampton and Camden School Districts where he served as Vice Principle. His special love was for mathematics.
Alvernon retired after 31 years in education. He then started McHenry Taxi Service, a business built on integrity and service. After 20 years, he retired for the last time.
Alvernon was a man of many interests: softball, woodcraft, gardening and fishing. His woodcraft specialty was building kitchen cabinets, decks and bookshelves for friends and family. His yearly gardens were both beautiful and useful. His love for fishing would take him out all day to bass fish.
If you visited, you were made to feel like family and fed. His meal specialty was large family breakfast. He cooked every morning waking everyone in the house when it was time to eat. His method to alert you was: two knocks on your wall and the words "breakfast ready!"
Alvernon was known to be active in the Camden Community and in church; he gained a reputation of service by being a kind, compassionate, and humble Christian leader loved by many.
He departed this life on Thursday, February 21, 2020.
