Mr. George Powell, 74, of Newport died Tuesday, March 8, 2011.
He was born September 23, 1936 at Elaine, Arkansas, the son of Merlie E. and Ruby (Vance) Powell.
He married Miss Lola Snyder on November 2, 1957.
Mr. Powell graduated from Central High School in Helena in 1957.
He began his career in law enforcement at the Helena Police Department where he served as Sergeant for six years. Mr. Powell then began his career as an Arkansas State Policeman on June 15, 1965. He received his commission as an Arkansas State Policeman in March, 1966. Mr. Powell retired as Corporal on January 1, 1988, after twenty-three years of faithful service. Mr. Powell was proud to be a licensed pilot, performing his first solo flight on April 18, 1971. He was a member of the retired Arkansas State Police Association, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and having coffee with friends.
Mr. Powell was a veteran of the Naval Reserve, serving for eight years. He was a member of the Diaz Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Tommy Wooten, Chester Powell, and James Powell; and one sister, Marie Hulsey.
Mr. Powell is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Lola (Snyder) Powell; one daughter, Brenda Powell of Newport; and many dear friends.
Graveside services were held at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Helena.
Honorary pallbearers were the Arkansas State Police, and his many friends.
