March 14, 1912 - April 12, 2009
Harry Keith Showalter, 97, of Searcy, Arkansas, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 12, at White County Medical Center after a long and full life devoted to his loving family, friends and community. He was born March 14, 1912 in West Point, Arkansas, the son of Abbie and Jessie Showalter.
He was a World War II Army veteran and a recipient of numerous service medals. In 1945, he resumed working for the Mississippi River Transmission Corporation which eventually took him to Tuckerman where he raised his family.
Always community – minded, he was a member of many civic organizations including the Service Club, the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club of which he was a member for 40 years. After retiring to Searcy in 1977, he enjoyed gardening, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Tuckerman and Searcy, serving in many capacities. He especially enjoyed teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Merl Showalter, Ralph Showalter, Hugh Showalter and Russell Showalter; and one sister, Maxine Newton.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Dora Lee Price Showalter of Searcy; one son, Dr. Ken Showalter and his wife Barbara of Searcy; one daughter, Judy Showalter Irwin and her husband Jim of Little Rock; four grandchildren, Dr. Blake Showalter and his wife Leigh Ann of Searcy, Brooke Showalter of Arkadelphia, Jill Irwin Penick and her husband, Dr. Ted Penick of Little Rock, and Clark Irwin of Oxford, Mississippi; and two great-grandsons, Edward Moore Penick IV and Worthen Clark Penick of Little Rock. He is survived by one brother, Calvin Showalter and his wife Rena of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Emogene Wilson of Searcy; and two sisters-in-law, Jean Showalter and Mattie Showalter, both of Searcy.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in Searcy, Wednesday, April 15, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. immediately
