Obituary: The South Reporter, Thursday, November 21, 2013

Melvin Scarborough, age 90, of Red Banks, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013. Born on June 1, 1923 to Charles Henry and Sally Bertha Scarborough in Marmaduke, Ark., he grew up with his brother, Edward, and sister, the late Euelene Wall. With the approval of his father, he eagerly joined the U.S. Navy at the early age of 17 and served in World War II in the Pacific. Upon return after the war, he married Lorene Piker on May 3, 1948. They initially lived in Memphis, Tenn., followed by Olive Branch and lastly, Red Banks. Together, they had four children, Dwight, Larry, Joan and Karen.
Melvin loved to build things. He worked after the war in construction and was a prolific concrete worker and supervisor. He built numerous buildings during this time with Allen and O’Hara in Memphis, Tenn., to include work on Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium and the Turner Complex at the University of Mississippi. He also built several houses throughout the years, doing the majority of work himself. In his later years, he enjoyed tree farming and growing hay.
He was a life-long member of the Freemasons and was also a Shriner. He loved to travel with his horse and perform in parades. Melvin also loved a good story and didn’t mind bending your ear to tell one.
Mr. Scarborough is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lorene; sons Dwight Scarborough and his wife Anita of Horn Lake, Dr. Larry and his wife Jackie Scarborough of Sewanee, Tenn.; daughters Joan and her husband Dr. William McClatchy of Southaven, Karen and her husband Lt. Col. Michael Murphy, USAF retired of Columbus, along with eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and his brother Edward Scarborough of Southaven.
Memorial service was held at Holly Springs Funeral Home on November 19, 2013 at 10 a.m., followed by burial service in Bradford, Arkansas.

Unless a man undertakes more than he possibly can do, he will never do all that he can.
