When Merle Willie Sellers was born on August 26, 1922, in Faulkner, Arkansas, his father, Leonard, was 29 and his mother, Katie, was 33. He married Mildred Mae Hoover on January 21, 1945, in his hometown. They had seven children during their marriage. He died on March 16, 2007, in Conway, Arkansas, at the age of 84, and was buried in Mayflower, Arkansas.
