April 20, 1903 - February 17, 1953
El Dorado - Charles Alfred Langley, 49, employee of Gulf Refining Company in the Smackover oilfield, died at his home at Standard-Umsted at 4 a.m. Tuesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, it was reported here. Mr. Langley is said to have shot himself in the head with a .22 rifle in the bedroom of his home. Further details of the tragedy were not know here. Ouachita County Coroner George Mathis of Camden, who investigated the shooting, returned a verdict of suicide. Born in Ouachita county, the son of John D. and Mattie Lambert Langley. Mr. Langley spent his entire life in that county. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist church and had been employed by Gulf for the last 27 years. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Emmie Sue Wingfield Langley; two sons, Cpl. Charles M. Langley of Fort Bragg, N.C. and Ronnie Langley of Standard-Umsted; a daughter, Miss Loella Langley of Standard-Umsted; a brother M. L. Langley of Prince Frederick, Md.; and two sisters, Mrs. E. E. Brown of Port Bridge, La., and Mrs. Jessie Daniels of Camden. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Cross Roads Baptist church with the Rev. D. W. Stark, pastor of Mt. Home Baptist church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dale Taylor, pastor, Smackover Baptist church. (Camden News - February 19, 1953)
